Who we are and what we do

Cancer Research UK is the world's leading independent organisation dedicated to cancer research. We support research into all aspects of cancer through the work of more than 4,250 scientists, doctors and nurses.

Cancer is common. Around 285,000 new cases are diagnosed each year in the UK. At Cancer Research UK we are working hard to improve our understanding of cancer and develop better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat the disease.

In addition to our research program, we provide information on cancer to cancer patients and their families, the general public and health professionals. We also work with the Government to make sure that cancer stays at the top of the health agenda.

How we raise funds

More than one in three of us will develop cancer in their lives. Many of us have lost someone to it. We all want cures to be found.

Cancer Research UK is the leading independent funder of cancer research in Europe, but gets very little Government funding. We are almost entirely funded by the public. Without the generosity and dedication of our supporters we would not be able to continue to make progress against cancer.

Every year of research improves our understanding of how to prevent cancer and treat it more effectively. In 2006/07 our world-class cancer scientists, doctors and nurses were able to take forward their pioneering investigations. This is only possible because of the incredible support we receive from the public, but there is still much more to do.
